I am firm believer that God gives good gifts and that his grace falls like rain… Or like the Jesus Culture song says, “If His grace is an ocean we are all sinking…” I think we will never fully now the extent of all the things God has saved us from. Things like sin and our desires. We think we know what we want… and God so ever gently says, “No trust me that may be what you want but its not what you need.” So we complain and whine because we feel as though he is with holding good from us…. but two things are true. Our opinion of what is “good” or “bad” for us personally is purely subjective….
Because if it “hurts” us than it must be bad but when God is trying to deal with our sin issues and bring healing to us we will not necessarily think of the pain as good… yet we fail to remember that God “prunes” and “disciplines” those he loves.
It’s like the scripture says:
…If your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead? Or if they ask for a dish, do you give them a snake? Of course not! So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.
And sometimes friends his good gifts do not look life what we want them to look like. We may think that relationship guy/girl is right for us yet God says I know that you want this but trust me it is not the best thing for you… it is detrimental and will only leave you scarred… He will not give us this stone we think is a jewel… And yet like I said we feel like he is with-holding good… yet we do not realize that with-holding the gift is our greatest blessing… because he only has the best planned for us…
“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:17
The more we learn of the essence of God, the more we learn of who he is and we realize that at the core of who he is, is love than we realize that favor sometimes doesn’t look like favor, yet we can trust that he is in control and believe that he is the perfect gift giver… he doesn’t give you the ugly itchy Christmas sweater that you will never wear… rather he saves the best for His children, and he gives in the way that will mold us and bless us… and a gift that will say, “Wow! He knows me… this is exactly what I needed and wanted (well what we begin to learn to “want” for what is good and praiseworthy and honorable)…”
Because you see in our journey as we become more like him we learn that He “works all things for the good of those whom love him…” And we may not have gotten the promotion or the shiny new BMW but friends he has something good for us as we wait, trust, and put our hope in Him… don’t disregard the gift because the package isn’t flattering, but believe that it is taking form and shape and entrusting it to a God who is the master gift-giver… Whom is keeping his hand over the closet of chaos that could erupt and make what we already think is bad worse…
Yet his mercy and grace and essence will tell us that he is good and he ever only does good…. So lets hold to this and believe….
Because the new bright horizon is on the way.
